Social Connections and Your Health
When we consider health and fitness, our minds often jump to protein intake, gym routines, sleep quality and stress management.
However, we rarely think about the effect our relationships have on our overall well-being.
Research consistently shows that high-quality relationships contribute to longer, healthier and happier lives. Strong social connections can actually lower the risk of chronic and serious illnesses, including heart disease, stroke, dementia, depression and anxiety.
As social beings, we cultivate vital relationships with family, friends, coworkers and community members. These connections directly influence our ability to thrive and provide essential support when navigating life's challenges.
Given this, it's worth evaluating your current relationships.
Are they contributing to your health and happiness?
The People Around You
When building your social circle, it's beneficial to be intentional about whom you connect with.
Prioritizing shared values and goals and nurturing supportive, growth-oriented friendships is crucial. Focus on surrounding yourself with individuals who inspire and uplift you, offer honest feedback, and celebrate your achievements.
The people in your life have a profound influence on your health outcomes. It's perfectly acceptable to be selective about who you spend your time and energy with.
As James Clear wisely stated about community, "One of the most effective things you can do to build better habits is to join a culture where your desired behavior is the normal behavior."
It makes sense, right?
If you’re trying to drink less but your social group is full of hard-partying people, it can be very hard to accomplish your goals.
But the reverse is also true. If you’re trying to work out more often and the people around you are active, vibrant people who encourage you to get moving, it will be much easier to find success.
I work hard to surround myself with people who influence me in a positive way, and I ensure that my gym is full of the right people, too.
It’s amazing to see how my clients support, encourage and cheer for each other, both in my online app and in person.
If you’ve got important health and fitness goals, I’d encourage you to spend time with people who give you the energy to accomplish them.
And if you need to find a group of “the right people,” send me a DM or message!
